Nakuru Park Day Trip

Nakuru national park is a 177sqkm park located some 160km north west of Nairobi on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru national park is located in the very volcanically active floor of the rift valley system and is one of the six rift valley lakes in Kenya including Naivasha, Elementaita, Baringo, Bogoria, lake Nakuru, Lake Turkana. 


The Nakuru Park is most famous for the millions of flamingos that occasionally line the lake edges like a pink ribbon which can be seen from miles away. Nakuru was established as a bird sanctuary due to the large diversity of birds found here. Lake Nakuru is a Ramsar site which means it’s a world recognised wetland an important bird area and a world heritage site. 

Nakuru is also a rhino sanctuary as well as a Rothschild giraffes sanctuary which are both very endangered. The Nakuru day trip is popular for its ease of doing a game drive since it’s a full y fenced park with a huge population of animals. The animals to see here include Lions, rhinos, leopards, giraffes, buffalos, hippos, gazelles, zebras, hyenas, baboons, vervet monkeys, cheetahs, water bucks among others.

The mountain stands at 2600m asl at the rim and a hike up the Longonot takes about 4-5hours to the rim and back.
